OVARC Field Outing to Fairbank Ghost Town - March 18, 2017
We will gather at at 9 AM on March 18 at an Arizona ghost town, Fairbank (https://www.blm.gov/az/st/en/prog/cultural/fairbank.html), which is about 10 miles west of Tombstone. Mapquest tells me the drive takes 93 minutes from my home in Tortolita. There are dozens of ghost towns in Arizona but most are only a memory. Fairbank had the train depot that served the Tombstone area and it was abandoned around 1972, but some buildings remain and the history is well documented on the website.
As always, we’ll have 100 watt HF radio and antenna, battery power, table, shelter, and logging computer. Bring your lunch and a chair. We’ll operate as long as anyone wishes to do so, on CW, SSB, PSK, and RTTY, probably on 40, 20, and 15 meters, whichever is open at the time. New operators are encouraged to attend and old timers will be on hand to provide guidance and advice on any ham-related topic. The only way to defeat mic fright is to get on the air and talk! We will help.
