We have upgraded to on-line, computer-based testing program for accuracy and convenience using a club provided tablet computer made available to you at the time of your test.
NOTE: Personal tablestablets, cell phones or computers are NOT permitted.
If you are unable to use a club provided tablet computer to take the test or need a special accommodation of any type, please let us know your needs by contacting us a minimum of two weeks in advance at VE@TucsonHamRadio.org. If you fail to meet this requirement, you may be barred from the exam session. If possible, we will provide a traditional paper test and/or address your needs as best as we can to facilitate a comfortable and satisfying testing session.
Advance registration for any test is mandatory ! See more details below.
If you have a question or problem, e-mail VE@TucsonHamRadio.org.

Follow these Simple Steps to Receive Your New License
1. In preparation for taking your Amateur Radio exam, there are many sources of information about the hobby, basic electronic theory and FCC rules and regulations that you will have to abide by when exercising the privileges of your new, soon to be acquired license. In addition to those, you should enhance your study using the current exam question pools:
License Class Element Pool Dates
Technician 2 July 1, 2022 - June 30, 2026
General 3 July 1, 2023 - June 30, 2027
Amateur Extra 4 July 1, 2024 - June 30, 2028
2. If you will be taking an exam for the first time, you will need an FCC Registration Number or FRN. You must get this in advance of the test session and before you can register. You do not have to hold any kind of license to apply for an FRN. This must be done on-line at: fcc.gov.
Remember, if you have registered for a test in the past or are taking the General or Extra Class exam, you will already have an FRN number: it will show on the front of your license. If you already have an FRN, you can skip this step.
3. Once you feel confident in your ability to pass the test AND you have your FRN, you can pre-register for an exam session at HamStudy.org.
Even though we allow and encourage “walk-ins”,
** PRE-Registration is Mandatory **
You can do it any time before walking in the door to take the exam !
Create an account you do not already have one, log in and then click on “Find a Session”.(You can limit the search by using the filters at the top of the screen.)Then scroll down to the OVARC test session that you’d like to attend and click on the green time slot button. The registration processor will guide you through the process. If the session is full, click on the Load More button.Under certain circumstances, the VE team may opt to conduct an additional test session about 90 minutes later, but this is unusual and may only happen at the Southern Arizona Hamfest testing session due to a high number of applicants.
If you are unable to register, contact us at VE@TucsonHamRadio.org for assistance.
4. Anyone with special needs, please call Wally Wilson at xxx-yyy-zzzz or e-mail VE@TucsonHamRadio.org a minimum of 2 weeks prior to the test date. We will do everything we can to accommodate you.
5. Arrive at your pre-registered test location on time or early. The VE team reserves the right to notnot to admit any candidate if they deem that there is insufficient time to take a test.
6. Be prepared for your test session by observing the following points:
-
A government issued Photo I.D. is required.
-
Pay the test fee of $15.00 CASH – Exact change only please.
If you pass a test, there is no fee to take the next level element. (Example: You pass the Technician test and want to take the Ggeneral test during the same session.)
NOTE: A separate fee is required for a RE-TEST of any exam element. (Example: you take and fail the Ttechnician test and want to take it over.) Make sure you have sufficient cash on hand if you want to retest!
-
If taking a paper test only: Blue or black Pens or #2 pencils and eraser.
-
Scratch paper is provided but must be turned in when you complete an exam element.
-
Follow these restrictions on calculators !!
Exam Tools provides a basic scientific calculator while taking the on-line exam.
-
If and only if you are taking a paper test, you may bring a basic non-programmable calculator (not a cell phone).
Be prepared to demonstrate to the satisfaction of the VE team that there are no memories or programs stored in the calculator that could be used in any way to cheat.
-
Cell phones cannot be used as calculators and MUST NOT be used or available during the testing session. ABSOLUTELY NO EXCEPTIONS ! ! ! ! !
-
If you are upgrading, a signed current FCC amateur license.
-
If you are upgrading, a photocopy of the same license .
7. NOTE: We do not collect the FCC License fee after you pass your test(s) !!
The FCC will be charging you $35 for a new license that needs to be paid they will assign your license grant. It must be paid on-line at FCC.gov. Once this fee has been paid and acknowledged, you can check back later to find your new call sign, license grant and begin exercising the privileges of your new Amateur Radio License !
NOTE: If you are upgrading to a General or Extra license with this testing, you will not be charged for the upgrade.
